National Science Center Malaysia Reopens! Local Mama’s Honest Review

Planning to visit the newly reopened National Science Center Malaysia with your little ones?

Umm, a bit of a spoiler alert but… it doesn’t look that much different than before it was refurbished 😅

That being said, it IS a fun, interactive, and budget-friendly museum for kids. Personally, I find it’s worth a visit!

Also, there are some fun new sections on the upper floor that you should definitely check out.

⭐ National Science Center Highlights ⭐

✅ Daily science shows

✅ Indoor playground

✅ Outdoor water park (no, really!)

Things to consider:

❌ It’s not easily accessible by public transport.

❌ I do have some gripes about their exhibits, but I’ll leave the rant for later.

What Can Kids Do At The National Science Center?

The science museum is HUGE and there’s plenty to do, both indoors and outdoors!

I’ll take you section by section:

Freshwater Fish Tunnel

This mini Aquaria-esque tunnel makes for an IG-ready entrance to the exhibits. It’s so calming to see patin, tilapia, and all the other freshwater fishies swimming about overhead.

Tip: This is one of the photo hotspots for most families. If you’re planning to get a good photo with minimal photobombs, try snapping photos here closer to closing time (it was quieter around this time when we went, at least).

Wonderspark Gallery

This interactive space has plenty of play-based stations highlighting the concepts of wind, light, and water.

We spent a good 15 minutes just at this wind maze exhibit. It was pretty mesmerizing to see how opening the maze exit doors manipulated the direction that the balls traveled in.

There’s a hurricane simulator that I was too chicken to go into because I was having a good hijab day and didn’t want to take any chances.

Science Valley

This section has a fun mix of exhibits! It starts with an environmental feature, which then leads to all things humans and plants.

The explorations of the human body are pretty cool – I think it’s quite impactful for kids to be able to see highly-visual exhibits of the brain, the heart, different types of bacteria, and how babies grow during pregnancy.

The section on plants has a fun exhibit on photosynthesis, which requires a bit of cooperative work to share with kids the importance of sunlight, water, and fresh air.

Kidz’ World

The music area totally brought out my inner kid. I mean, who can resist a light-up floor piano? And the stringless harp is too cool!

This crane toy has a mechanism that’s simple but so fun. It’s one of the most popular attractions here – expect a longgg queue 😅

And then there’s this indoor playground! Sure, it’s a little smaller than most indoor playgrounds you’ll find in KL, but judging from the giggling kids climbing around and sliding down, I don’t think they minded one bit.

There’s also a play area for kids under 4. It was still under construction when we visited, but previously, the area had a mini playground and interactive activities.

Science Shows

There’s a daily science show that takes place at the center stage area.

It’s a simple setup, but it’s pretty darn entertaining!

Language-wise, we’ve been to shows where they’re presented in a mix of English and Malay, while some shows were presented completely in Malay.

I’m assuming the language(s) used are tweaked to accommodate the audience for the day.

👉 Afternoon: 3 p.m.

Tinker Garage

If you and your kids love analog-style, hands-on activities, THIS is the spot to check out!

It’s a new space on the upper level, and it’s filled with simple yet super-satisfying activities.

You can screw on an assortment of nuts and bolts, make rubber band designs on a geoboard, and make paper fans float using a wind machine!

Obskura XR (Additional Admission Fees Apply)

Going with the current trend of immersive, tech-themed experiences, this paid exhibition offers visitors some pretty fun stuff.

The interactive Rainbow Slide is THE hit activity here – be prepared for your kids to run up the colorful stairs and zoom down the slide (with a digital rainbow trailing behind them!) a gazillion times 😂.

The AR Wall-Climbing section is pretty popular too! Kids can select their preferred challenge from the console and climb away.

For something a little soothing, there’s Jelajah Biru (Blue Exploration, assuming I didn’t botch that translation), an immersive, digital underwater display.

Phew, that was quite the activity list, huh?

We’re not done yet. Let’s head outdoors! 🌳

Water Plaza

When you exit the main lobby, walk to the left and you’ll see steps leading to a huge garden.

Take about a 5-minute walk down and you’ll see the famed pool playground! Bring along your wetsuits if you plan to play at the pool.

I noticed bathrooms were provided near the pool. We’ve yet to enjoy a dip here so I haven’t had a chance to see if the bathrooms are decent.

Obstacle Course

Instead of walking down or up the path to the water park, kids (AND parents!) can also climb, hop, and slide their way through this playful pathway. So fun right?

Prehistoric Park

There’s a small collection of dinosaur figures near the main entrance of the museum. It’s right by the busy highway though so be extra careful to keep your kids safe.

National Science Center Kuala Lumpur: My Honest Review

Overall Rating: 4/5

Honestly, the value you get from the minimal entrance fee is just incredible.

It’s a HUGE space with indoor and outdoor activities, so you can easily spend the whole day here and experience everything the museum has to offer.

It’s nowhere near as flashy as Petrosains but the fact that it has a good variety of activities for such a budget-friendly price makes the science museum a worthy visit.

What I Like About The National Science Center

✅ The old-school mechanical feel of the interactive exhibits. They make it super fun for little kids to fiddle around with gears, knobs, buttons, and more.

✅ The scientific topics covered. There are exhibits on the human body, photosynthesis, musical concepts, energy, and more.

✅ All the play areas! I love that there’s an indoor playground, a quieter play area for under-4’s, and even an outdoor waterpark.

✅ Family facilities are provided. There are washrooms provided at the entrance and in the exhibition area. A baby room is available as well, next to a kid-friendly toilet.

✅ It’s one of the cheapest kid-friendly attractions in KL (and kids under 7 enter free!).

What I Don’t Quite Like About The National Science Center

❌ A lot of the exhibits in the Wonderspark and Science Valley sections are too high for kids’ eye levels. I had to carry my daughter for her to be able to properly interact with some of the exhibits. Having more stepstools around would have been really helpful.

I was hoping the refurbishment would have addressed this, but it doesn’t seem like that’s the case 🙁

❌ Although we went to the museum when they’d just reopened, several activities were already out of order.

❌ It’s not easy to get here by public transport. Semantan is the closest MRT Station. From there, you can take a 5-min(ish) Grab ride to the museum.
