Best Free Things To Do In KL With Kids

If all you’re looking for is a photo with the world’s tallest twin towers, you can literally walk up to the area and snap away.

You’ll only need to buy a ticket if you’re up to the Petronas Twin Towers observatory deck and sky bridge.

You’ll also find KLCC Park a short walk away – there’s plenty of fun stuff for kids!

There’s a wading pool, a fun playground for all ages, and a jogging track lined with a wonderful variety of local trees.

Shower rooms are available near the wading pool.

Suria KLCC mall is right by the park – parent room facilities are available here if needed.

This free museum does a wonderful job sparking conversations about money in a kid-friendly way!

Everything is play-based and interactive – there’s a good mix of difficulties to suit kids of all ages. The pretend bank is lots of fun too!

Keep a lookout for their engaging seasonal exhibitions!

Their previous Masih Ada Waktu kids’ interactive exhibition was wonderfully curated – I especially loved the play area where kids can run a pretend cafe 😍

8. Merdeka Square & Sultan Abdul Samad Building

Once the historic site where our independence was declared in 1957, Merdeka Square’s sprawling green lawn is now a crowd-favorite spot for little ones to get the wiggles out.

Also: Yes, the towering flagpole here is one of the tallest in the world.

(Yes, we do have an itty-bitty obsession with building very tall things.)

Right across, you’ll see the majestic Sultan Abdul Samad Building, with its gorgeous Moorish features, from the copper domes to the arched doorways.

The building has recently been refurbished, and you can now enjoy a stroll indoors to appreciate the beautiful architecture. There’s a well-curated gallery here that highlights the history of the city and the building.

9. Central Market (Pasar Seni)

Central Market is an easy one-stop spot for Malaysian souvenirs – but my daughter and I love hanging out here just for the vibes.

It’s a sensory playground for little explorers – from vibrant batik prints and intricate wood carvings to the calming scents of local aromatics.

There’s a gallery on the first floor that shares the long history of this landmark and how it has evolved since its start in 1888.

💡 If you’re keen to try your hand at some traditional art, there’s a reasonably priced batik painting spot here that we enjoy.

11. Kwai Chai Hong Street Art

Kwai Chai Hong is a bit of a hidden gem in Chinatown – it’s a beautifully curated alleyway, with IG-ready murals and some of the coolest art installations!

We usually stop by budget-friendly local eatery Kafei Dian for some comfort food before enjoying a stroll through this artsy alley.

🚆LRT Kelana Jaya Line / MRT Kajang Line: Pasar Seni station

12. Sri Maha Mariamman Temple

Just a short walk away from Kwai Chai Hong Street Art is the oldest Hindu temple in KL

The temple’s iconic entrance (called a gopuram) is mesmerizing. There are over 200 statues of Hindu deities featured on the five tiers, each one telling a story from Indian mythology.

Entry to the temple is free – you’ll just need to pay a minimal token to have your shoes stored at the entrance.

13. National Mosque (Masjid Negara)

Kuala Lumpur has some incredibly beautiful mosques, and the National Mosque is possibly the most popular one to visit in the city.

If you’re Muslim, take the opportunity to pray in the grand hall. It’s breathtaking!

Non-Muslims are welcome to explore the mosque outside of prayer times:

  • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. daily (except Friday)
  • 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. daily
  • 5.30 p.m. – 6.30 p.m. daily

There’s a peaceful vibe here from the breezy open-air hallways and water fountains, perfect for a calming break on a long day of exploring.

👚 Modest wear is required:

  • For women: hair covered, with long sleeves and bottoms
  • For men: long bottoms

Alternatively, you can borrow a robe on-site.

📍 Location: Jalan Perdana, Kuala Lumpur

14. Batu Caves

The towering Lord Murugan statue that greets you at Batu Caves should give you some idea of how epic a visit to expect. It’s such a breathtaking place!

batu, caves, malaysia, temple, hindu, religion, pray, nature, hills, batucaves, batu, batu, batu, batu, batu, malaysia, malaysia, malaysia, malaysia, batucaves, batucaves

Snap some awesome family photos at the 272 rainbow-colored stairs! Just hang on tight to your phone and keep food, water, and small items hidden. The cheeky monkeys here are quick at snatching.

While the main area at Batu Caves is free to enter, there are a few smaller cave temples that charge an entrance fee.

👚 Modest wear is required – shoulders and knees should be covered for both men and women.

📍 Location: Batu Caves, Gombak

⏰ Main Cave: 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. daily

🚆KTM Seremban Line: Batu Caves station

15. Thean Hou Temple

Thean Hou Temple is a wonderful place to learn about Chinese culture and traditions in KL. The iconic tiered Buddhist temple is an absolute work of art – it looks like a grand palace!

I think kids will love the Zodiac Garden. There are 12 animal statues here representing the Chinese zodiac, and they can search their birth year to find out their zodiac.

Head to the upper level of the temple to get an awesome sweeping view of the city! It’s especially beautiful when it’s all lit up at sundown.

📍 Location: Taman Persiaran Desa, Kuala Lumpur

⏰ 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily

🚆LRT Kelana Jaya Line: Bangsar station (5-min drive away)

16. Children’s Libraries

Children’s libraries are some of our go-to free spots in KL – I love that most libraries in the city feature playful designs that make them so welcoming for little ones!

Here are some of our favorite children’s libraries:

17. Kuala Lumpur Reads (and various neighborhood chapters)

If you love the idea of reading outdoors, pack along your current reads (plus a mat, and probably some coffee and snacks!) and join the Kuala Lumpur Reads community every Saturday at 8.30 a.m. – 10.30 a.m. at Perdana Botanical Gardens!

There are a few neighborhood chapters you can check out too, if these are closer to you:

18. Mall Playgrounds

If you’re looking for something indoor and free, here are some malls around KL that have surprisingly fun playgrounds where kids can burn off energy while you enjoy the air-con (and maybe a coffee):

19. KLCC Lake Symphony Light & Sound Show

If you’re looking for awesome places to visit in KL for free at night, head right back to KLCC Park!

The esplanade transforms into a mesmerizing fountain show that’s a whole lot of fun for little ones. Grab a spot on the lawn and watch as the water and lights dance to the music!

The show happens nightly at 8 p.m., 9 p.m., and 10 p.m. There’s a “lights only” version that plays at 7.30 p.m., 8.30 p.m., and 9.30 p.m.

📍 Location: KLCC Park

🚆 LRT Kelana Jaya Line: KLCC station

🚌 KL Hop-On Hop-Off (City Route): KLCC

20. The River Of Life

This site is where the two main rivers of Kuala Lumpur meet (in fact, it’s the humble start of how the city came to be!).

Lit up by LEDs, this refurbished waterfront has an otherworldly glow and makes for a pretty chill walkabout at night.

The nearby Merdeka Square comes alive at night too, with kids enjoying running around on the field and pop-up stalls offering every kind of lit-up toy imaginable.

📍 Location: Jalan Benteng, Kuala Lumpur

🚆 LRT Kelana Jaya Line: Masjid Jamek station (10-min walk)

🚌 KL Hop-On Hop-Off (Garden Route): Merdeka Square

21. Saloma Bridge

If you fancy a nighttime stroll for the family, strap on some comfy shoes and get ready to capture some IG-worthy snaps on Saloma Bridge!

This futuristic-looking pedestrian walkway is about a 10-minute walk from KLCC, and it connects to the bustling Kampung Baru neighborhood.

While you’re there, snap some family photos with the cool-looking bridge as the backdrop (expect photobombs – it gets pretty crowded with locals and tourists!).

📍 Location: KLCC / Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur

🚌 KL Hop-On Hop-Off (City Route): KLCC

Free Places In Kuala Lumpur I Don’t Recommend

Free place to visit in KL I don't recommend - National Planetarium
  • National Planetarium – Entry to this attraction is free but… it’s pretty dated. The exhibits have hardly been updated since I came here as a teen (I’m close to 40 now). For something similar, the National Science Center is a wayyy better option. It’s free for kids under 7.

Tips For A Budget-Friendly Family Trip To Kuala Lumpur

  • Plan your activities and routes ahead of time. This makes it easier to draft your travel budget. Here’s my sample kid-friendly Kuala Lumpur itinerary if you need some inspo!
  • Make full use of public transportation. The MRT, LRT, and Monorail lines are pretty well-connected all across the city and even into the suburban areas.
  • Look out for budget-friendly kids’ menus. Plenty of restaurants in KL offer value-for-money meal sets for kids – some offer kids-eat-free deals too!
  • Bring a reusable water bottle. Most malls provide free water dispensers in the baby room.
  • Stay protected and stress-free. Check out SafetyWing to learn more about family-friendly coverage for your KL trip.

PS. If you’re a fellow local mama, here’s my #1 tip to keep costs low: pack your own food! 🍓

Eating out can add up, especially with kids in tow – so we love bringing our own snacks and meals for outings like park days and library visits.

I got to know about OiYO by Montigo recently and they make super cute, spill-proof lunch boxes, bottles, and bags designed just for families on the go.

You can even customize them with names and stickers at their new OiYO Studio in 1 Utama! It’s fun, practical, and makes a great gift too 💖

Places To Visit In KL For Free: Final Thoughts

Exploring Kuala Lumpur with kids doesn’t have to mean spending big – some of our most memorable family days have been the simplest (and mostly free)!

From parks and libraries to city landmarks and evening shows, KL really does make it easy for families to get out, explore, and make memories without stressing out too much about the budget.

At the end of the day, it’s a reminder to myself that hanging out with the family doesn’t always have to be flashy and super pricey – it’s the company that matters after all 💕

If you’re visiting or living here, I hope this list helps you discover a few new favourites.

If you’ve found a fantastic free spot in KL that I should check out next, I’d love to hear about it!
