✋ Not-So-Great Day Trips From KL (in this mama’s opinion)
While there’s no shortage of fun places to visit around Kuala Lumpur, not every destination works well for a day trip, especially with little ones in tow.
Here are a few spots I’d personally save for an overnight stay (or skip altogether):
🚫 Cameron Highlands
Cameron Highlands is a breath of fresh air (literally!), but it’s not ideal for a day trip from KL – especially with kids.
The journey is long (3 – 4 hours each way) and full of winding roads that may cause motion sickness. It’s way too tiring to enjoy properly in just a day.
It’s such a fun family-friendly place though! I recommend staying at least 1 night to enjoy all that Cameron Highlands has to offer.
🚫 Penang
Penang is one of my fave places ever (though it’s my dad’s hometown, so I may be heavily influenced by wonderful childhood memories haha) and it’s a must-visit if you’re in Malaysia for a few days.
The food here is TOO GOOD! And I love all the beautiful old buildings (it’s a UNESCO World Heritage city too).
But it’s just not a great idea for a day trip. Even if you fly, the travel time + airport hassle makes it exhausting for families.
You’ll want to stay at least 2–3 nights to really enjoy all the family-friendly gems here (George Town murals, Penang Hill, and of course, all that amazing street food!).
🚫 Colmar Tropicale (Bukit Tinggi)
Colmar Tropicale is beautiful… but it’s not exactly the most authentic way to experience Malaysia.
The faux-French aesthetic can feel a bit gimmicky, especially if you’re visiting from overseas and hoping to explore legit Malaysian culture.
That said, if you’re a local looking for something different for the kids to enjoy, it can be a fun day trip.
The cool weather makes for a nice change from humid KL, and kids will especially love the Rabbit Park.
